The scallop shell is the traditional symbol of the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela in North West Spain. This route crosses Cornwall on the Saint Michael’s Way from St Uny church, Lelant, to St Michael’s Mount near Penzance. It is a route taken by Irish, Welsh and Cornish pilgrims, that avoids the tempestuous seas around Land’s End and allows them to visit the important shrine of St Michael’s Mount before embarking for Spain.
